Increasingly over the last few years there has been much hype to do with cheap international calls using the internet. Unsurprisingly there are a variety of ways that they can be carried out, and while some even appear to be completely free, there are several conditions that may result in appearances being deceiving.

Calling PC to PC

Calling one PC from another through the internet is probably the cheapest way to go about things. All that is really needed is an internet connection, a microphone, and speakers, although headsets that combine the two may be more comfortable. Also needed would be software such as Skype on both the PC that is calling, and the PC that is being called. Thus instead of merely cheap calls to Russia, one can have practically free calls.

Bear in mind that although phoning itself is free in this manner, there are other costs that may need to be taken into account. Users on regular broadband ADSL packages that have no download limits need not generally worry, however those on dialup or limited ADSL should take into account their usage and costs.

Calling PC to phone

Generally many companies that offer internet calls try to market this form of cheap international calls as well. Unfortunately instead of being free, these type of calls actually do have costs attached, and they vary from provider to provider. Some even require the purchase of an entire kit to enable such calls to function.

When compared to other options, these calls do not do so well, as there are a whole host of cheaper alternatives that a person could choose from. That said, it cannot be denied that there is a certain ease of usage via having a facility like this available, seeing as it means that a person could make fairly cheap calls from anywhere provided he has his computer and an internet connection handy. In this way, if travelling and staying at a hotel that has internet available, you could make cheap calls to Russia.

Calling Phone to Phone

While most internet telephony providers have some sort of option for phone to phone, these tend to be even more costly and compare very badly. There are a handful of providers that do offer really cheap international calls, but these tend to be limited in coverage and thus not so widely used in general.

Therefore, in closing, it can be remarked that while calling Russia via PC to PC over the internet is probably the cheapest possible option, there is still a certain amount of flexibility available when using PC to phone calls. On the downside, that very same flexibility comes at a price and so it may be worthwhile having a browse through alternative options should PC to PC communication not be the most suitable. Of course if a person should feel that they would find themselves in a variety of situations and may want to simply have more options at their disposal, then there is no harm in pursuing even the more costly options.
